الملخص
Al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah, compiled by Imām Yaḥyā ibn Sharaf al-Nawawī (d. 676 AH), is one of the most widely studied collections of Prophetic traditions in Islamic scholarship. Although the work contains forty-two hadiths. Due to its concise nature and comprehensive subject matter, the collection has attracted numerous commentaries (shurūḥ) by Muslim scholars throughout history. This research focuses specifically on the commentaries of al-Arbaʿīn al Nawawiyyah produced between the tenth and twelfth centuries AH. This period represents an important phase in the development of Islamic intellectual and scholarly traditions. Scholars of this era engaged extensively with the Qur'an, Hadith, jurisprudence, theology, Arabic language, spirituality, and principles of Islamic law. Their commentaries on al-Arbaʿīn therefore provide valuable evidence of how Prophetic traditions were interpreted, explained, and applied within the scholarly context of their time. At this stage, the challenge was not merely to produce new knowledge, but rather to select, organize, discuss, and transform earlier material into forms that could be effectively utilized for teaching. The institutional tradition of the Islamic legal schools (madhāhib) had become well established, while the language of Sufism and ethics had become an integral part of scholarly life. Moreover, commentaries on Hadith literature expanded the system of cross-referencing and intertextual scholarship among various classical texts.
