Maulana Muhammad Idris Kandhlawi was a distinguished scholar of Hadith, Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic jurisprudence, and Islamic thought in the Indo-Pak subcontinent. He rendered remarkable services in the fields of education, authorship, scholarship, and religious leadership. Born into a renowned religious and scholarly family, he received his education from prestigious institutions such as Darul Uloom Deoband, Mazahir Uloom Saharanpur, and Madrasah Ashrafiyyah Thanawi. Among his eminent teachers were Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi, Allama Anwar Shah Kashmiri, and Allama Shabbir Ahmad Usmani. Maulana Kandhlawi served as a teacher at renowned institutions including Darul Uloom Deoband, Madrasa Aminia Delhi, Jamia Abbasia, and Jamia Ashrafia Lahore, where he trained thousands of students in the disciplines of Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, and Islamic theology. His notable scholarly works include Seerat-ul-Mustafa, Al-Taleeq al-Sabeeh Ala Mishkat al-Masabih, Ahkam al-Quran, and Tuhfat al-Qari, which reflect his profound scholarship and intellectual insight. He also played an active role in the Pakistan Movement, the movement for the implementation of Islamic law, the Khatm-e-Nabuwwat Movement, and the formulation of an Islamic constitution for Pakistan. He strongly supported the Two-Nation Theory through his intellectual and scholarly contributions. Maulana Kandhlawi’s legacy remains a shining example of knowledge, moderation, wisdom, and religious insight. He passed away on 28 July 1974, yet his academic and religious contributions continue to serve as a guiding light for scholars and researchers alike.
