الملخص

Islamic Shariah laws have purified not only the objectives of war, but also the methods of war. It has set and defined some objectives for war, that it can only be for: the supremacy of Allah, respect for humanity, supporting the oppressed, elimination of strife and corruption, and the establishment of peace and security. In this way, all those inhumane methods which were prevalent all over the world before Islam were completely abolished. Moreover, war was bound by ethical principles. Until the beginning of the 17th century, Europe was completely unaware of even the concept of laws of war. In theory and in practice, war was considered exempt from moral limits and the restrictions of rules and regulations, and combatants had the absolute and unlimited right to inflict harm upon each other. Adherence to treaties and covenants, treatment of prisoners of war, burial of the enemy’s dead, what treatment should be given to the enemy when he lays down arms, how quickly weapons should be set aside when the enemy shows inclination toward peace-and similar other battlefield instructions-are such bright torches of guidance that if war is fought without taking guidance from them, there remains no difference between humans and animals.
