Abstract
The study of the Prophetic Seerah in Islam is not merely an account of historical events; rather, it provides valuable insights into the Sharīʿah rulings, religious objectives, social principles, and underlying wisdoms reflected in various aspects of the blessed life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The lives of the Mothers of the Believers (Ummahāt al-Muʾminīn) and the Prophet’s ﷺ marriages to them constitute a significant and worthy subject of research in the study of the Prophetic Seerah. Allah Almighty granted the wives of the Prophet ﷺ the distinguished status of “Ummahāt al-Muʾminīn” (Mothers of the Believers), in addition to the honor of being his wives. Through them, the Muslim Ummah gained knowledge concerning domestic life, marital affairs, rulings related to women, and numerous other religious matters. The various instances of the Prophet’s ﷺ marriages embody Sharīʿah-related, daʿwah-oriented, social, educational, and reformative wisdoms. Some of these marriages contributed to strengthening social ties in particular circumstances, some served to consolidate relations with certain tribes, while others provided protection, support, and honor to women. Likewise, the marital life of the Prophet ﷺ contains numerous jurisprudential rulings and distinctive characteristics related to his unique privileges as a Prophet. This article presents a research-based and analytical study of the reasons and objectives behind the marriages of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with the Azwāj-e-Muṭahharāt, the juristic rulings derived from these marriages, and the wisdoms underlying these marital unions.
